Insurance for farm vehicles: a no-nonsense guide

Do I legally have to insure my farm vehicles?

If your farming vehicles are only ever going to be used on your farm and will never venture onto public roads then you may not have to insure them, but if you ever need to drive those vehicles on the road then you will need third party insurance at the very least.

Since even moving between different fields can mean farmers have to drive their tractors onto a public road at some stage, the vast majority of farmers in Northern Ireland do insure their tractors at the very least.

Can I insure all my farm vehicles under a single policy?

Yes, if you own more than one farm vehicle you should be able to insure them all under a single farm vehicle insurance policy, and in many cases doing so will prove more cost effective than insuring each vehicle separately.

What counts as a farm vehicle?

It probably goes without saying that those vehicles that most people think of as agricultural vehicles can be covered under a farm vehicle insurance policy, including tractors, harvesters, balers, ploughs, JCBs and telehandlers.

Less obvious, though, is that a wide range of other vehicles that are used for the day-to-day operations of a farm can also be covered under a farm vehicle insurance policy, including vans, trucks, quads, ATVs and 4x4s.

It’s important to bear in mind, though, that if these vehicles are also used outside the normal operations of the farm they must not be fuelled with red diesel, since this could invalidate their insurance.

Can I insure my car under my farm vehicle insurance policy too?

Yes, most farm vehicle insurance policies will allow policyholders to insure their cars under the same policy, and in most cases the owner will be insured to drive their car for both business and social use.

As with vans, trucks etc, it’s important to bear in mind that if you plan to use your car beyond the normal operations of the farm it must not be fuelled with red diesel.

Does farm vehicle insurance cover trailers too?

Farm Vehicle ImageTrailers are sometimes covered as standard on fully-comprehensive farm vehicle insurance policies, but if your own cover doesn’t extend to trailers most insurance providers will allow you to add this on as an optional extra.

This will sometimes mean your policy might cost a little more, of course, but given how important trailers can be to a farm’s day-to-day operations it’s certainly worth considering.

What levels of cover are available for farm vehicle insurance?

You should have the same three levels of cover to choose from as you’d have if you were taking out a regular car insurance policy:

  • Third party insurance: This is the lowest level of cover available, which means it can sometimes be the cheapest option too.
  • Third party, fire, and theft: As the name suggests, third party, fire and theft insurance will cover you if one of your farm vehicle’s damages a vehicle or other property belonging to a third party, as well as paying out if one of your own vehicles is stolen or damaged by fire.
  • Fully-comprehensive: This is sometimes the most expensive level of cover available, because it’s also the most comprehensive, but it does mean you’ll be covered for any damage to your own vehicles. Fully-comp farm vehicle insurance sometimes includes cover for agricultural trailers, too.
