Impound Insurance Northern Ireland
If your vehicle has been impounded and you need NI impound insurance then you’ve come to the right place.
The PSNI seizes and impounds over 7,000 vehicles across Northern Ireland each year, and the owners of those vehicles can’t rely on their standard car insurance, van insurance or motorbike insurance policy when they want to reclaim the impounded vehicle.
They’ll need Northern Ireland impound insurance instead.
How much does impound insurance cost in Northern Ireland?
That will depend on a wide range of variables, many of which will be specific to you and your vehicle. For instance, the type of vehicle that has been impounded will affect the cost of the policy, as will the reason the vehicle was seized.
The duration of your impound insurance will also affect the premium, with longer policies likely costing more than shorter impound insurance cover.
The best plan is to compare NI impound insurance quotes from a range of providers, and then go with the one that offers the best coverage at the most competitive price.
What’s the minimum amount of time impound insurance can be taken out for?
The minimum amount of time you’ll need on your impound insurance policy is 30 days – anything less than this and the vehicle won’t be released to you.
Of course, this means if you aren’t planning to go and reclaim your vehicle from the pound until next week it wouldn’t make sense to take out 30 day impound insurance today, because by the time you came to reclaim your vehicle you would have less than the minimum time required on your policy.
What do I need in order to get my car out of the pound?
In order to reclaim your impoundedyou’ll need to bring ID and proof of vehicle ownership, as well as proof that you have impound insurance for the vehicle. As previously mentioned, you’ll also need to make sure this NI impound insurance is valid for at least 30 days from the date you reclaim your vehicle.
How long do I have to reclaim my impounded vehicle?
You’ll have a total of 14 days to reclaim the vehicle, although it would be sensible to reclaim it as quickly as possible because you’ll be charged additional fees for every day the vehicle is in the pound.
What happens if I decide not to take out impound insurance?
Simply put, you won’t be able to reclaim your vehicle if you don’t take out impound insurance. After your 14 day period to reclaim the vehicle is up the police will either have the vehicle crushed or scrapped (if it’s unsalvageable) or auction it off (if it’s in good condition).
You’ll still have to pay the impound fee and storage fees though, so choosing not to take out impound insurance and reclaim the vehicle doesn’t get rid of those costs.
