Average NI car insurance costs in 2025

The average cost of NI car insurance had fallen throughout 2025 but has increased again in 2026. So much so that Northern Ireland is currently the 3rd most expensive region in the UK for car insurance.

Whether prices will continue to increase will depend on factors such as inflation, the cost of repairs and labour, the volume of claims received by insurers, and the availability of common repair parts.

Which NI council area has the highest car insurance costs?

Naturally, Belfast and Derry/Londonderry have some of the highest car insurance premiums in Northern Ireland. The Belfast average is currently £871, while Derry City and Strabane stands at £659.

This is a common trend with larger cities, as they typically have higher crime rates and road risks like congestion and a higher number of road users. These can all affect a driver’s likelihood of needing to make a claim, so they are reflected in premium costs.

The cheapest car insurance costs in NI are currently found in Ards and North Down (£547) and Causeway Coast and Glens (£554), with residents saving around £324 a year when compared to drivers in Belfast.

The average cost of NI car insurance compared to UK regions

While Northern Ireland was one of the cheapest regions in the UK to insure a car as recently as 2024 (ranking 10th out of 12 regions) it climbed the price rankings significantly throughout 2025. As of Q1 2026*, Northern Ireland has retained its position as the 3rd most expensive region in the UK.

Overall, this shift is more in line with historical costs, where NI car insurance prices were frequently among the highest in the UK. These figures suggest that the upward trend seen over the last year is persisting as we move through 2026.

NI car insurance costs for different age groups

At an average of £1,386, young drivers (17-24) in Northern Ireland face some of the highest insurance costs in the UK, second only to London.

Premiums fall sharply as drivers move into the 25-34 age group, with an average drop of 43% to £786. This significant decline suggests that while insurers view the youngest NI drivers as particularly high risk, premiums stabilize quickly as they gain experience.

For drivers aged 35-44, premiums drop further to £568, which is actually lower than the average for the same age group in London, the West Midlands, and the North West. However, this trend shifts for the oldest demographics.

For motorists aged 65 and above, car insurance in Northern Ireland averages £490. While this represents the lowest lifetime premium for NI drivers, it is significantly higher than the UK-wide average of £407 for this age group. In fact, Northern Ireland is the second most expensive region in the UK for over-65s, surpassed only by London. This indicates that both the youngest and oldest drivers in the province continue to face a significant “location premium” compared with the rest of the UK.

Young people (Aged 17–21): average premiums by NI District Council

For many young drivers in Northern Ireland, premiums actually spike between the ages of 17 and 18. This is most visible in Belfast, where costs rise by over £520 year-on-year, and Derry and Strabane, where they rise by nearly £284, before beginning a steady decline through ages 19, 20, and 21.

Belfast City Council is consistently the most expensive area for young motorists, with premiums significantly higher than all other council areas:

  • At age 18, Belfast premiums reach a peak of £3,152—which is approximately £1,385 more than the most affordable areas like Mid & East Antrim.
  • By age 21, average Belfast premiums remain high at £2,048, nearly double the Northern Ireland average for that age (£1,128).
  • Areas such as Causeway Coast & Glens and Mid & East Antrim show the most significant improvement for young drivers, with average premiums successfully dropping below the £1,000 mark by age 21.

The data highlights a large disparity based on location for new drivers. At age 18, the difference between the cheapest and most expensive council area is over £1,300. While this gap does narrow as drivers gain experience, the “Belfast premium” remains a significant factor for young drivers well into their early twenties.
